The Perfect Fit: A Room-by-Room Rug Size & Placement Guide

Choosing the right rug size is the secret to a well-balanced room, but getting the proportions correct can be a challenge. Our Comprehensive Rug Size Guide takes the guesswork out of your home styling, offering expert advice for every space—from grand living rooms to narrow hallways. At 11 Rugs Gallery, we help you navigate standard dimensions and placement rules to ensure your rug complements your furniture rather than overwhelming it. Learn how to measure your floor accurately, avoid common sizing mistakes, and find the ideal dimensions to anchor your home with confidence.”

Measure before you start

Before you start looking at rugs you need to measure the dimensions of your room to work out the approximate space you have for a rug and any constraints you have (door openings, etc).

Bigger is usually better

A small rug can make a room look small and its elements disconnected. When in doubt, go for a bigger size to help tie everything together.

The 45-cm rule

Most interior designers will tell you to leave around 45cm of bare floor around a rug to get the right proportions. However, for small spaces you can tweak this.

Don’t be afraid to experiment

You’re allowed to bend the rules a bit when choosing a rug – they’re only guidelines after all.

Runner rugs are the perfect blend of style and utility, characterized by their long, narrow profile. These versatile pieces are essential for protecting flooring in high-traffic zones like hallways, narrow aisles, and staircases, while wider variations make a grand statement in entryways. Because runners are prone to shifting, 11 Rugs Gallery recommends pairing them with our custom-cut fabric underlays. Our breathable, needle-punch mats provide the intense grip needed to keep your runners perfectly aligned and safe, even in the busiest parts of your home.

Our premium felt mats provide the essential grip and loft needed to protect the intricate weave of a handmade rug, ensuring it stays flat, secure, and stunning without the risk of slipping.”

Rugs by Room Guide

  • Large Living Rooms (All Furniture On): Best for centering furniture in open-plan spaces to avoid an overcrowded feel. Standard Sizes: 275 x 365 cm or 300 x 400 cm.
  • Mid-Sized Layouts (Front Legs On): Ideal for furniture placed against walls; ensure the front two legs rest on the rug to anchor the room. Standard Sizes: 180 x 275 cm or 250 x 300 cm.
  • Small Spaces (Coffee Table Only): Suited for minimalist areas where the rug sits beneath the central table. Standard Sizes: 120 x 180 cm or 150 x 215 cm.
  • Hardwood Floor Protection: Leave a 20 cm border of exposed wood. Always use a breathable felt underlay—unlike rubber, it prevents floor damage and keeps handmade rugs secure.
  • Zoning Large Areas : Use multiple area rugs to define different functional zones within one large room.
  • The “Cozy Perimeter” (Multiple Rugs): Instead of one large rug hidden under the bed, use a combination of smaller pieces. Place a rug at the foot of the bed and two runners on either side for a plush, warm foundation. Standard Sizes: 75 x 245 cm or 90 x 150 cm.
  • The “Full Coverage” (Under the Bed): If placing a rug beneath the bed, ensure it extends approximately 90 cm beyond the sides and foot for a balanced look. Queen Bed: 250 x 300 cm. King Bed: 275 x 365 cm or 300 x 400 cm.
  • The “Side-Only” Alternative: For a minimalist approach, use an area rug that extends only from the sides of the bed, leaving the foot of the bed exposed.
  • Scattered Accents: In larger suites, several small area rugs can be scattered to fill empty floor space and add texture.
  • Pro Tip: Because bedroom rugs often sit on polished floors, a breathable felt underlay is essential to keep smaller rugs from bunching and to protect your flooring.

  • Dining Room Rug Size & Placement Guide: Ensure a seamless dining experience by choosing a rug that provides both style and safety. A custom-cut fabric underlay is highly recommended here to keep the rug flat and prevent chairs from catching on the edges.
  • The “Chair Clearance” Rule: Your dining rug must be large enough to accommodate all chairs. The back legs should remain securely on the rug even when chairs are pulled out for seating.
  • Optimal Extensions: To avoid tripping hazards and ensure a balanced look, choose a rug that extends approximately 60 cm beyond each side of the dining table.
  • Standard Sizes for Dining: 6–8 Seater Tables: 200 x 300 cm. 8–10 Seater Tables: 275 x times 365 cm.
  • Pro Tip: In dining areas, breathable felt underlays are superior to rubber mats. They provide a dense, stable foundation that withstands the constant movement of chairs while protecting your floor’s finish from scratches.

  • Central Placement: Position a runner in the center of your hallway to create a balanced, inviting path. To hide high-traffic wear, opt for rich tones or patterns rather than very light colors. Standard Sizes: 80×300 cm or 80×400 cm.
  • Offset Layout: For wider hallways, place the runner along one side and arrange furniture (like a console table or bench) against the opposite wall to maintain a clear walking path. Standard Sizes: 80×300 cm or 80×400 cm
  • Safety & Stability: Because runners are prone to shifting, a non-slip fabric underlay is essential. Our custom-cut felt mats provide an intense grip that prevents dangerous bunching and sliding, ensuring your handmade wool runner stays perfectly in place.

  • Kitchen Rug & Runner Size Guide: Upgrade your kitchen’s comfort and safety with strategic rug placement. In moisture-prone areas, a breathable fabric underlay is vital to prevent slipping and protect your floors from trapped humidity.
  • Sink & Prep Zones: Place a small accent rug in front of the sink or main prep area to provide cushioning in high-traffic spots. These smaller pieces are perfect for adding a pop of color while protecting your floor from spills. Standard width are: 75  and 80 cm.
  • Narrow Kitchens & Galleys: Runners are the superior choice for narrow kitchen layouts. They fill the floor space beautifully, providing a soft foundation underfoot while you move between workstations. Standard Sizes: 80 x 200 cm or 80 x 200 cm.
  • Durability Tip: Kitchen rugs face constant movement. Using a custom-cut felt underlay ensures your rug stays anchored to the floor, preventing the edges from curling—a common tripping hazard in busy kitchens.
